“Why Delaware Faith Leaders Can’t “Live in a State of Denial” About Climate Change”

As we delight in the vibrant blooms of spring, we must also confront a stark reality: our planet has experienced ten consecutive months of record-breaking temperatures, a clear sign of our changing climate. The serene beauty of spring can no longer mask the increasing threats of extreme heat, especially to our most vulnerable communities.

This summer, we are bracing for another season of potentially life-threatening heat waves. Heat is the leading weather-related killer in most large U.S cities, exceeding deaths from hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning, and blizzards combined.
According to USAFacts on the average, extreme heat kills an average of 1,714 people in the United State each year.

Children, the elderly, the poor or homeless, people who work or exercise outdoors, and those with chronic medical conditions are most at risk.

In response, Delaware Interfaith Power & Light (DeIPL) is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our elderly and other at-risk residents by establishing three vital cooling centers in houses of worship in the most vulnerable areas of the state. These safe havens will offer relief from the heat, providing a critical resource during the hottest days.

However, we cannot do this alone. Your support is crucial in bringing this project to fruition. A donation today will go to the setup and operation of these cooling centers, as well as educating Delawareans about the risks and responses to extreme heat.
